How to: Onboard SmartThings Hubs and Z-Wave Locks (VTrips Reference)
Welcome to the Lynx onboarding guide for SmartThings Hubs and Z-Wave smart locks. The SmartThings Hub (V3 or Aeotec) acts as the central controller for your property's smart network, communicating with your devices via Z-Wave and connecting them to the Lynx cloud. This comprehensive guide will walk you through connecting your hub to Wi-Fi, installing the required Lynx drivers, and successfully excluding and pairing your Z-Wave locks (such as Yale or Schlage).

Important Compatibility Notice: Please note that Ezlo hub onboarding currently experiences difficulties on iOS (including iOS 26 and iOS 18). For a seamless experience, we highly recommend using the MiOS App on an Android device, where it works reliably.
When to use this guide
- When setting up a new SmartThings Hub (V3 or Aeotec) for a VTrips property.
- When excluding and pairing Z-Wave smart locks (e.g., Yale or Schlage) to ensure proper communication with the hub.
- When verifying LED light statuses for troubleshooting hub connectivity issues.
Benefits of using this guide
- Centralized Information: Consolidates all pairing codes, LED status definitions, and step-by-step connection procedures in one place.
- Enhanced Efficiency: Streamlines the onboarding process, ensuring that the hardware is configured correctly on the first attempt.
- Reduced Errors: Provides precise sequences for Z-Wave exclusion, which is critical for a clean lock-to-hub connection.
Step by Step Process: Onboarding Hubs & Locks
Before starting, ensure you have removed the old Brivo or PointCentral hubs, and that you have the SmartThings hub, lock master PIN, and mobile device ready. The Hub and Lock must be within 15 feet of each other during this process.
| Step | Actions |
|---|---|
| Step 1: |
Connect the Hub to Wi-Fi
|
| Step 2: |
Verify Hub Drivers Due to platform updates, a specific Lynx driver must be installed on the hub before any locks are paired. Lynx will pre-program this part. You only need to verify this step with Lynx support if the hub was recently factory reset. |
| Step 3: |
Exclude the Lock (Clear Existing Networks)
|
| Step 4: |
Connect / Pair the Lock
|
| Step 5: |
Verify Lock Drivers and Connect to Lynx Once paired, the lock must be authorized on the Lynx platform so codes can sync. Reach out to the onboarding team using your designated Google Chat channel, or call the Lynx support phone number to have them finalize authorization and attach the lock to the property listing. |
Key Features
- Real-Time Syncing: Once correctly paired and verified, PIN codes are pushed from the Lynx platform to the Z-Wave lock immediately.
- Central Hub Management: Allows comprehensive management of property access and smart devices through a single integrated interface.
- Visual Diagnostics: Clear LED indicators on the hub allow property managers to quickly diagnose connection status without technical tools.
