Onboarding: VTrips Reference Article for Yale Wifi Locks
Welcome to the Lynx onboarding guide for Yale Wi-Fi smart locks. Unlike Z-Wave locks that require a central smart home hub, Yale Wi-Fi modules (such as the WF1 Direct Wi-Fi Module or the Yale Connect Wi-Fi Bridge) connect directly to the property's local Wi-Fi network using the Yale Access app.
This guide will walk you through the physical setup, registering the module, configuring the Wi-Fi connection in the app, and linking the lock to your Lynx property management dashboard.
Before you start
Before you begin, ensure you have:
- Yale Smart Lock (e.g., Yale Assure 2, YRD216, YRL216).
- Yale Wi-Fi Smart Module (the black Yale/August module inserted above the batteries)
- Wi-Fi Credentials for the property.
- Mobile Device (phone or tablet) with Bluetooth turned ON and the Yale Access app installed.
- Yale Access Account Credentials (provided by Lynx,). Do not create a duplicate account with your personal phone number, as it can cause conflicts.
🚨Important 🚨
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Only: Yale Wi-Fi modules cannot see or connect to 5GHz networks. Ensure your router is broadcasting a 2.4GHz band.
Step 1: Physical Installation and Master Code setup
Note: If your lock is already installed, and you have the Master Code, you can skip to Step 2
- Install the Lock Hardware: Install the lock on the door using the manual provided in the box. Do not follow the manual's programming instructions just yet.
- Insert the Module: Temporarily remove a battery to kill residual power, insert the Yale Wi-Fi module firmly into the slot above the battery compartment, and replace the batteries.
- The lock should play a brief confirmation tone, indicating the module is registered and ready for the app.
-
Create the Master/Programming Code: * Wake the keypad.
- Press
⚙ (Gear)➔1➔⚙ (Gear)➔[Enter a 4-8 digit code]➔⚙ (Gear). (Note: Some older models like the YRD216 may require pressing the Gear key twice at the end).
- Press
Step 2: Register the Wi-Fi Module on the lock
Once the module is inserted and the master code is set, you must register the module directly on the lock's keypad before configuring the app.
- Wake the keypad.
- Enter your
Master Code➔⚙ (Gear). - Press
7➔⚙ (Gear). - Press
1➔⚙ (Gear). - The lock should play a brief confirmation tone, indicating the module is registered and ready for the app.
(Note: If you are using a pre-programmed module provided by Lynx for an existing lock, the registration sequence may simply be Master Code ➔ ⚙ (Gear) ➔ 7 ➔ ⚙ (Gear) ➔ ⚙ (Gear). Wait 30-40 seconds for it to activate).
Step 3: Connect to the Yale Access App & Wi-Fi
- Log in: Open the Yale Access app and log in using the credentials provided by Lynx.
- Add Device: Click the Menu (☰) on the top left and select "Set up a new Device".
- Scan QR Code: Scan the QR code located on your white Smart Module (or the Connect Bridge). If it won't scan, choose "Enter Serial Number" (starts with M1).
- Follow App Prompts:
- Create the "House" name to exactly match the property nickname on Lynx.
- Calibrate the lock and DoorSense when prompted.
- Wi-Fi Setup: * When asked, choose "Use my Module" or "Begin Wi-Fi Setup". (Do not skip this, or the lock will only work via Bluetooth and won't talk to Lynx).
- Select the property's 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and enter the password.
- The app will test the signal. Check the "Wi-Fi Signal" in the app settings to ensure it reads as "Good" (-70 dBm or lower/better).
Step 4: Verify and Connect to Lynx
Once the lock is online and controllable via Wi-Fi in the Yale Access app, it must be linked to Lynx.

Best Practices
-
Module Communication Error: If the app throws a "Module Communication Error," select Fix This Now -> Different Lock -> Sync Entry Codes. You will be prompted to power-cycle the lock (remove battery, press a key, remove module, wait 30 seconds, replace module, replace battery), and then re-register the module using the
7 ➔ Gearkeypad sequence. - Test the Door: Always test the physical lock mechanism using the Yale Access app while standing outside Bluetooth range (e.g., turn Bluetooth off on your phone) to guarantee the Wi-Fi connection is successfully carrying the signal.
